Accelerated Learning in Ethiopia

Capital for Good is investing in the scale-up of an innovative learning program. Since 2011, this unique program has operated small classrooms for children ages 9 to 14 who are not in primary school, often due to poverty. Using activity-based learning to make education fun and accessible, facilitators deliver three years of curriculum within 10 months, which allows the children to enter the formal school system at a fourth-grade level. At the same time, the mothers or guardians of these students participate in self-help groups to improve their household savings and income levels to support the children’s ongoing education. This program has reached tens of thousands of children to date.

The program is now in a position to be taken on by the government’s education bureaus across the country; the government has already implemented our learning model in a number of their classrooms in one region. Capital for Good is providing critical support to the program through this transformation point, ensuring its future sustainability.
